Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa has decided to veto three bills recently passed by the National Assembly, bringing the total to six vetoes in less than a month.
The initiatives involved include the Reform Law to the Social Security Law, which refers to the Special Regime of Galapagos; the Organic Law Reform to the Organic Law for Older Persons; and reforms to the Social Security Law.
The National Assembly has responded with a statement denouncing these vetoes as motivated by political interests and representing a direct blow to Ecuadorian families and the most vulnerable groups.
According to the text, the vetoed projects aimed to ensure active and dignified aging for older adults, as well as improve working and social conditions in the Galapagos, which is now uncertain following the commissioner’s decision.
The previous veto, on January 6, included significant initiatives such as labor reform to promote youth recruitment and the Legislative Function Organic Law, which provided for sanctions against a controversial political practice in the country.
Experts have noted that some of these reforms, such as the one aimed at promoting youth employment, could generate additional costs for companies without guaranteeing a real increase in job opportunities for this age group.
Additionally, the proposal regarding the National System of Professional Qualifications has sparked controversy by not considering labor certifications as professional titles in formal education.
This context of vetoes and political tensions reflects a climate of instability in Noboa’s government and raises questions about his ability to advance a legislative agenda addressing the urgent needs of the Ecuadorian population.
