Egypt and Qatar have assumed a crucial role as mediators and guarantors of the ceasefire agreement between Israel and the Islamist group Hamas. This agreement, which will enter into force on Sunday, January 19, seeks to end the hostilities and facilitate the entry of humanitarian aid into the region.

On this Friday, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry issued a statement highlighting a telephone conversation between Egypt’s Foreign Minister and Qatar’s Prime Minister, Mohamed bin Abdulrahman.

Both leaders emphasized the importance of implementing the agreement without delay and discussed the start of a central follow-up mechanism that will operate from Cairo to monitor its implementation.

The agreement provides for a first phase of 42 days during which humanitarian aid and fuel will be allowed into Gaza, as well as the rehabilitation of hospitals. In return, Hamas will release 33 Israeli hostages, while Israel will release an unspecified number of Palestinian prisoners. This exchange marks a significant step towards de-escalation of the conflict.

Abdulrahman, in an interview with Al Jazeera, stressed that the guarantors have established a mechanism to address any possible breach of the agreement. Additionally, a joint operations room will be established in Cairo to handle any issues that could threaten the stability of the ceasefire.

The Qatari Prime Minister also expressed his hope that the UN Security Council will adopt a binding resolution to ensure full compliance with the agreement.

The Egypt-Qatar initiative reflects a coordinated effort by regional and international actors to achieve lasting peace in Gaza, amid a critical humanitarian landscape.
