A new Egyptian proposal regarding a truce in the Gaza Strip was publicly presented by the Egyptian presidency, hours after the start of a round of talks in Doha. The proposal came in a moment of uncertainty whether Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu would accept it or not. For its side Hamas did not respond, only a week before the region’s eyes turn to the fateful US elections on November 5.

According to political experts the announced Egyptian proposal is an attempt to move forward the negotiations that have been frozen for two months and puts pressure on Netanyahu. This could also test the seriousness of the prime minister of Israel, who might obstruct the completion of the deal before the US elections, awaiting the support of his ally Donald Trump if he reaches the White House.

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi said in a press conference last Sunday that “Egypt has made great efforts in the past few days to launch an initiative aimed at moving the situation and stopping the fire for two days, during which four hostages will be exchanged for prisoners in Israeli prisons. He also stressed that within 10 days negotiations will be held to complete the procedures in the Gaza Strip, leading to a complete ceasefire and the entry of aid.”

Political analysts believe that the Egyptian proposal faces the challenge of Netanyahu’s opposition to it, according to what was reported in the media that he requested amendments to it in the Doha meeting. On the other side, the mediating countries Egypt and Qatar or Hamas will not accept this Israeli position, in light of what is also being reported in the media that Hamas has put forward a comprehensive deal as a new proposal.
