In a statement, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry announced “the success of the Egyptian efforts (…) in cooperation with our regional and international partners, to reach a ceasefire agreement.”

“The first phase will last for 42 days during which Hamas will release 33 Israeli detainees in exchange for Israel freeing over 1,890 Palestinian prisoners,” it detailed.

The note confirms “the commitment of the mediators (Egypt, Qatar, and the United States) to ensure the implementation of the agreement in its three phases within the agreed timelines, and in a way that ends the humanitarian tragedy in the Gaza Strip.”

It thanked the “fruitful and continued cooperation of Qatar to ensure the success of the ceasefire agreement,” as well as “the fundamental role played by the new U.S. administration headed by President-elect Donald Trump in resolving the crisis, as well as by outgoing President Joe Biden.”

The statement reiterates “Egypt’s commitment, in coordination with its partners, Qatar and the U.S., to continuously work to consolidate the ceasefire agreement and fully implement its provisions.”

In this context, it confirmed the establishment of a “joint operations room, based in Egypt, to monitor the exchange of hostages (captives) and prisoners, and the entry of humanitarian aid into Gaza, as well as the movement of people following the reopening of the Rafah crossing,” which connects the Strip with Egyptian territory.
