Egypt’s Position on Ceasefire and Sovereignty

During a briefing in Beirut, Abdelatty reaffirmed:

“Egypt strongly affirms the necessity of a total and unconditional Israeli withdrawal from southern Lebanon, ensuring that not a single inch of Lebanese sovereignty or territory is compromised.”

The U.S.-brokered ceasefire, established on November 27, stipulated that Israeli forces should exit southern Lebanon, while Hezbollah was to relocate north of the Litani River by January 26.

Although Lebanese army units and U.N. peacekeepers were deployed before the deadline, Israel still maintains control over more than a dozen villages.

On Sunday, the United States and Lebanon announced an extension of the ceasefire deadline until February 18.

Ongoing Israeli Operations in Southern Lebanon

Abdelatty condemned the attacks on Lebanese civilians attempting to return home, stating:

“The illegitimate and unjustifiable targeting of Lebanese civilians returning to their homes must end.”

Despite the ceasefire, Israel continues near-daily operations, including:

  • Airstrikes and shelling
  • House demolitions
  • Allegations that Hezbollah is violating ceasefire terms by transporting weapons

Meanwhile, Lebanon has accused Israel of committing hundreds of ceasefire violations.

Diplomatic Engagement and Support for Lebanon

Egypt is actively involved in ceasefire discussions, engaging with:

  • Lebanese Foreign Minister Abdallah Bouhabib
  • Representatives from Israel, France, and the United States

Following a meeting with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun, Abdelatty congratulated him on his recent election by the Lebanese parliament.

“We have complete confidence in the wise leadership of President Aoun,” he stated.

Egypt reaffirmed its support for Lebanon, offering assistance with reconstruction efforts as the country grapples with the ongoing crisis.
