The African squad established its presence early in the match and opened the scoring in the 13th minute. Midfielder Emam Ashour put the team coached by Hossam Hassan ahead with a clinical finish. During the first half, the North African nation controlled the tempo and rhythm against an Australian side that sought to respond through physical play and aerial challenges.
Egypt dominated possession during the opening stages, creating several goal-scoring opportunities that pushed the Australian defense into constant pressure. The “Pharaohs” maintained tactical discipline, neutralizing Australia’s primary attacking threats while building plays from the midfield with precision passing.
Australia Responds Quickly
In the second half, Australian pressure increased significantly. The equalizer arrived in the 55th minute under unfortunate circumstances for Egypt. A defensive header by center-back Mohamed Hany inadvertently directed the ball into his own net following a free kick executed by Aiden O’Neill, leveling the score at one goal apiece.
The own goal shifted momentum temporarily, with Australia gaining confidence and pushing forward in search of a second goal. However, the Egyptian defense remained organized, absorbing pressure while looking for counter-attacking opportunities through star forward Mohamed Salah.
Despite scoring chances generated by both sides during the final stretch of regular time and the subsequent 30 minutes of extra time, the score remained unchanged thanks to outstanding interventions by goalkeepers Patrick Beach for Australia and Mostafa Shobeir for Egypt. Both shot-stoppers produced critical saves that kept their respective teams alive.
Penalty Shootout Decides
With the match heading to penalties after 120 minutes of intense football, Egypt demonstrated clinical precision from the spot. Mahmoud Saber, Ramy Rabia, Mohamed Salah, and Hossam Abdelmaguid all converted their penalties with composure and accuracy, placing their shots beyond the reach of the Australian goalkeeper.
Australia suffered from two missed spot kicks that ultimately decided the fate of the match. The missed attempts sparked celebrations among Egyptian players and fans, who watched the shootout unfold with mounting tension inside the stadium.
With this result, the Egyptian squad continues making history in the international tournament. The Egyptian national team advances further than in previous appearances, capitalizing on a disciplined defensive structure and the individual brilliance of its star players. Midfielder Emam Ashour was particularly influential, scoring the opening goal and maintaining possession during crucial moments of the match.
With this result, Australia was eliminated from the tournament, meanwhile Egypt now prepares for its round of 16 match against the winner between the current world champion Argentina and Cape Verde on July 7, at the Atlanta Stadium.
