The northern Gaza Strip experienced renewed Israeli airstrikes this Tuesday, targeting the city of Beit Hanoun and Khan Younis in the south, resulting in four fatalities and multiple injuries, according to local reports.
In Beit Hanoun, an airstrike on a civilian gathering claimed the lives of two members of the Al-Masry family, while a separate bombing at the entrance of the Kuwaiti Specialized Hospital in Khan Younis led to one death and left others injured. The fourth fatality was a young man in Rafah, who succumbed to injuries sustained when a tent was struck in an earlier air raid.
Deteriorating healthcare amid a tightening blockade
Gaza’s healthcare system is on the brink of collapse as the ongoing blockade and border closures by the Israeli military exacerbate shortages. Medical sources report a 37% deficit in medications and a 59% shortage of medical supplies, severely limiting the ability of hospitals to provide emergency care. Compounding the crisis, 34 hospitals have been deliberately targeted and destroyed, crippling the already fragile health infrastructure.
At Al-Quds Hospital, associated with the Red Crescent in Tel al-Hawa, operations have been suspended, forcing doctors to rely on rudimentary methods to treat the wounded. Such attacks on medical facilities represent blatant violations of international agreements and the Geneva Conventions, according to human rights experts.
A mounting death toll
The ongoing Israeli offensive, which began in October 2023, has resulted in the deaths of 51,000 Palestinians and 116,343 injuries. Rescue teams struggle to recover victims trapped under rubble as Israeli forces continue to target emergency responders, including ambulance and civil defense teams.
Despite repeated calls from the United Nations Security Council for an immediate ceasefire and directives from the International Court of Justice, the violence in Gaza persists. The international community faces increasing pressure to act decisively against what is being described as a genocidal campaign and an unparalleled humanitarian disaster.
