During the first cabinet meeting of his second presidency on Wednesday, U.S. President Donald Trump said that the European Union was born to “screw” the United States.

“The European Union was formed in order to screw the United States. That’s the purpose of it, and they’ve done a good job of it, but now I’m president,” he stated.

Trump said he would soon release details of his latest tariff threat. “We have made a decision and we’ll be announcing it very soon. It’ll be 25 percent,” he said.

The European Commission immediately shot back. “The European Union is the world’s largest free market. And it has been a boon for the U.S.,” the AFP quoted a European Commission source as saying Wednesday. The source also said that the EU would respond “firmly and immediately” to new tariffs.

In recent weeks, the Trump administration has thrown the partnership between the United States and Europe into turmoil by vowing to impose higher import taxes on European goods, claiming they would equal the tariffs imposed on U.S. exports.

During his first cabinet meeting, Trump took the opportunity to lash out at the Europeans, stressing that his country has a multi-billion trade deficit with the community bloc.

“They don’t accept, essentially, our agricultural products. They use all kinds of reasons why not. And we accept them all and we have a deficit of about US$300 billion with the European Union,” he said.

In 2024, the United States recorded a trade deficit in goods with the European Union of US$236 billion, according to data from the US Trade Bureau (USTR).
