The Russian Investigative Committee opened a terror attack investigation into the blast, which occurred after the detonation of an explosive device planted in a scooter parked next to the entrance of the residential building.
The bomb was detonated when 54-year-old Kirilov was leaving his home accompanied by his assistant. Investigators established that the explosive device, with a power equivalent to 300 grams of tri-lite, was hidden in an electric scooter that was next to the entrance of the apartment building.
The explosion was so powerful that the windows of the first three floors of the building were blown out. According to the RIA Novosti agency, which cites the emergency services, the bomb was activated remotely, by radio signals.
Sources of the investigation, cited by the Kommersant newspaper, pointed to the Ukrainian secret services as the possible authors of the attack.
On several occasions, Kirilov, who has been in charge of Russia’s radiological, chemical and biological defence since 2017, had denounced the existence of U.S. biological laboratories in Ukraine. The lieutenant general, who held the title of Hero of Labour of Russia, was due to meet a group of journalists today.
An anonymous source in the Security Service of Ukraine, quoted by the public news agency Ukrinform, claimed Ukrainian responsibility for the attack on Kirilov.
“The criminal nature of the kyiv regime is obvious. It is a terrorist state led by an illegitimate Nazi president. All those responsible must receive the punishment they deserve. Kirilov did a lot to increase the effectiveness of radiological, chemical and biological defence troops, and to ensure security and sovereignty,” said Vyacheslav Volodin, the speaker of the Russian Chamber of Deputies (Duma).
