According to footage shared by Saudi Arabia’s al-Arabiya channel and other press media, stormers tore off images of the martyrs, Iranian general Qassem Suleimani and the leader of the Lebanese Resistance (Hezbollah), Hassan Nasrallah, who were located outside the diplomatic mission.
Esmaeil Baghaei, Iran’s foreign ministry spokesperson, said embassy staff had vacated the building prior to any assault and all diplomats were in good health, and added that the Islamic Republic in contact with the parties responsible for recent developments in Syria, has warned about the storming of the embassy and called for the prevention of the recurrence of such attacks.”
The Iranian news agency Tasnim, said on Sunday that all Iranian servants of the Sayeda Zeinab shrine returned to Iran prior to the capture of Damascus by rebels, as the Iranian state TV reported earlier that HTS, had guaranteed that the sanctity of Shi’ite shrines in Syria would be preserved.
Sayeda Zeinab – the granddaughter of the Prophet Mohammad – is venerated by Shi’ites and her shrine is a site of mass pilgrimage for Shi’ites from across the world. It has also been a magnet for Shi’ite militiamen backed by Iran in Syria.
Iran was along with Russia and the Lebanese Shiite anti-Zionist group Hizbullah the main ally of the Syrian president Bashar al-Assad, who left the country on Saturday, December 7, and is currently in unknown whereabouts.
