Family of Former President João Goulart Expresses Support for President Nicolás Maduro and the Venezuelan Revolution

The relatives of former Brazilian president João Goulart, who was ousted by a 1964 coup with US support, delivered a letter on Monday to support President Nicolás Maduro and the Venezuelan people. The document is signed by the João Goulart Institute, created to preserve the memory of the former Brazilian president, and was given to the Venezuelan ambassador in Brazil, Manuel Vicente Vadell.

“We understand it as our duty, as of the greatest importance, in this difficult time of Latin America and the world, to have clearly and openly expressed our firm and unwavering positions to position ourselves on the right side, on the side where the left has always been, against the imperialist and economic colonialist policies, which always try to shed the blood of free peoples, especially in our Great Homeland, in our Latin America”, states the text.

The letter further states that “Venezuela, through the historical example, the tenacious example of Simón Bolívar, is a reference to fight against tyranny, oppression and interventionist policy of the United States, which has acted in our countries for years and years, Toppling democratic governments and installing fierce dictatorships in our countries, through the determination of the US State Department. Clearly Washigton-oriented policy”.

The document was handed over to Venezuelan diplomacy in Brazil by João Vicente Goulart, son of the former president and president of the institute who is responsible for keeping his father’s memory alive. During the visit to the embassy, the president of the institute expressed the willingness of his family, especially Maria Thereza Goulart, widow of former president João Goulart, to attend the inauguration of president Nicolás Maduro in January 2025.

Jango, the people’s president

João Gourlart, or Jango as he was known in Brazil, was deposed from the presidency in 1964 by means of a US-supported military-civic coup d’état. After his deposition, the country lived through 21 years of dictatorship, responsible for the death and disappearance of hundreds of Brazilians who fought for democracy in Brazil.

During his administration, Goulart put land reform at the center of the debate, which opened a series of debates in Congress and aroused the hatred of Brazil’s landowners. According to a poll by Ibope at the time, Jango had a 70% approval rating and would win the 1965 elections, which were not held because they were prevented by the coup of the previous year.
