Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), Qu Dongyu, called on Wednesday to pay more attention to Africa in the face of rising hunger on the continent during his speech at the G7 Development Ministers Summit in Pescara (central Italy).

Qu explained that one in 11 people in the world, or 733 million, face hunger in 2023, with numbers rising in Africa: “We need to work closely with the African Union and African leaders to better target our investment where it is most needed, and where we can have an impact at scale,” he said in a statement.
In this sense, he highlighted the initiative of the Italian presidency of the G7 to include a debate on “new strategies for the sustainability of coffee value chains” as “a good example of a sector with one of the most traded products, with up to 25 million peasant households representing 80 per cent of world production in many countries in Africa, Latin America and Asia”.
Qu also reiterated FAO’s commitment to the Food Systems Initiative presented by the G7 presidency last June, during the summit of leaders from the world’s seven most industrialized democracies (Italy, USA, France, Germany, UK, Canada and Japan) in Apulia (southern Italy).
This initiative, which focuses on low-income countries and supports projects in Africa, is “an important tool focused on addressing structural barriers to food security and nutrition, and building efficient, inclusive, resilient and sustainable agri-food systems,” according to Qu.
