First Cyclone of the Year in Mexico Will Leave Heavy Rains with Flooding

On Tuesday, the National Weather Service of Mexico (SMN) reported the coming accumulated rainfall that will reach 250 millimeters (mm), all this due to the formation of a new tropical cyclone.

In a bulletin, the organization predicted that cyclone ‘Uno’, which is about to form in the Atlantic Ocean, will cause flooding in Campeche and Chiapas, although the alert includes the states of Oaxaca, Quintana Roo, Tamaulipas, Veracruz and Yucatán, which will suffer “intense” rains(75 to 150 mm).

Also to Hidalgo, Tabasco and San Luís Potosí, where the forecast is “very heavy” rainfall (50 to 75 mm).

The statement also warns of the danger of strong gusts of wind that will reach 70 kilometers per hour (km/h) in the coastal states of southern Mexico, whose waters could generate waves two to four meters high.

In turn, there is the danger of possible waterspouts on the coast of Tamaulipas and Veracruz, so the SMN recommends that maritime vessels in the area exercise extreme caution.

At 12:00 hours from central Mexico (18:00 GMT), the potential cyclone was located approximately 260 km off the coast of Yucatan and about 570 km from the banks of Tamaulipas, and recorded winds that reached 85 km/h.

“It is expected to make landfall as a tropical storm during the night of Wednesday or Thursday morning, between the municipalities of Soto la Marina and San Fernando, both in Tamaulipas,” said Alejandra Méndez Girón, general coordinator of the SMN, at a press conference.

The National Coordination of Civil Protection recommended that citizens should not leave their homes if they live in an area that has previously been flooded or is considered to be at risk, go to the temporary shelters authorized by the authorities.

The cyclone will be called Alberto occurs after last season, hurricane ‘Otis’ caused havoc in late October 2023 in the state of Guerrero.
