Currently, Jorge Glas remains incarcerated in a maximum-security facility in Guayaquil.

On Thursday, the International Committee for the Freedom of Jorge Glas demanded that the government of President Daniel Noboa ensure the physical safety of the former Ecuadorian vice president, who is currently imprisoned.

“We alert the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) and the international community that the life of former Vice President Jorge Glas is in danger. It is the duty of the government led by Daniel Noboa to guarantee his life and physical integrity,” the Committee announced.

“We again request that the IACHR extend precautionary measures in his favor, given the systematic failure of the Ecuadorian State to meet its obligations under international law. The delay in actions by the Commission is incomprehensible,” it added.

During Rafael Correa’s administration (2007–2017), Glas served as vice president from 2013 to 2017. He later held the same position during the initial months of Lenin Moreno’s administration (2017–2021).

However, while in office, right-wing forces pursued a judicial campaign against him, accusing him of corruption, which led to his imprisonment, where he remained for five years. After briefly regaining his freedom, Glas entered the Mexican Embassy in Quito, where he was granted diplomatic asylum.

On April 5, 2024, Ecuadorian military and police forces violently stormed the embassy to arrest Glas. This incident led to the severing of diplomatic relations between Ecuador and Mexico. At that time, the Noboa administration justified its violation of international law by arguing that Glas still had time to serve on an eight-year prison sentence related to two corruption convictions issued in 2017 and 2020.

Currently, the former vice president Jorge Glas remains incarcerated in La Roca prison in Guayaquil, Ecuador’s maximum-security facility.
