Four-Year-Old Dies from Ebola in Uganda Amid New Outbreak

A four-year-old child has become the second fatality in Uganda’s latest Ebola outbreak, as confirmed by the World Health Organization (WHO).
Uganda’s Ministry of Health reported on Saturday night that a positive Ebola case was identified at Mulago Hospital, the country’s only referral center for the virus. The child died on Tuesday.
On February 25, Uganda confirmed 10 cases of a new strain of the Ebola virus, marking the country’s sixth outbreak. The first fatality was a male nurse who died before the outbreak was officially declared on January 30.
While eight patients under treatment were discharged in February, at least 265 people remain under strict quarantine in Kampala as a precautionary measure.
The latest outbreak has been linked to the Sudan Ebola strain, which has no approved vaccine.
The 2014-2016 Ebola epidemic in West Africa resulted in over 11,000 deaths, making it the deadliest on record. The virus is transmitted through contact with infected bodily fluids and tissues, causing fever, vomiting, and muscle pain.
Uganda’s Ebola surveillance efforts have been affected by cuts in foreign aid, particularly from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). The withdrawal of funding, initiated under former U.S. President Donald Trump, has impacted NGOs that assist nations in responding to infectious disease outbreaks, according to Charles Olaro, Uganda’s director of health services.
