French Prosecutor Seeks 20-Year Sentence for Dominique Pelicot in Rape Case
French justice handed down a historic sentence on Thursday, sentencing Dominique Pelicot to 20 years in prison for the systematic sexual abuse committed against his ex-wife, Gisèle Pelicot.
For nearly a decade, from 2011 to 2020, Pelicot drugged Gisèle with anxiolytics to make it easier for other men to rape her while she was unconscious.
This case has shocked French society and highlighted the urgent need to address gender-based violence crimes.
Police officers found more than 20,000 videos and photographs on Dominique’s computer, evidence that helped investigators identify a total of 72 abusers, although they only recognized 51 of them, including the victim’s husband.
The sentences for the abuser range from 10 to 18 years, although many of them argued that they acted under the influence of the “monster” Pelicot.
Gisèle Pelicot, who decided to give up her anonymity and make the trial public, stressed in her statements that “shame changes sides,” referring to the need for victims not to be stigmatized. Her testimony and the trial itself have sparked a national debate on misogyny and sexual violence in France.
The prosecution had requested severe penalties for all accused, reflecting the gravity of the crimes committed.
This verdict is seen as a turning point in the fight against machista violence in France, where sentences for sexual crimes have traditionally been considered lax.
