The IDF this morning released the names of five of the eight soldiers killed yesterday when an armored vehicle exploded in the southern coastal enclave.

The incident occurred at 05:45 local time when the soldiers were inside a Namera (a combat vehicle) that was hit by an anti-tank missile or improvised explosive device.

According to the IDF, the vehicle was part of a convoy on its way to rest after an overnight operation against Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) militiamen.

Two other IDF personnel from the 8th Armored Reserve Brigade were also killed in combat in northern Gaza on Friday, and a third died of wounds sustained a week ago.

To date, the armed forces have also acknowledged 15 killed during exchanges of fire with the Lebanese Hizbullah group on the northern border over the past eight months, and more than 300 killed during a Hamas armed operation on 7 October last year.

The army claims it has since eliminated thousands of Palestinian militiamen in the coastal enclave, although the figure cannot be independently verified, while the Lebanese group announced some 340 fatalities.

In early May, the IDF intensified its ground operations in southern Gaza by launching an assault on the city of Rafah, where more than a million Palestinians were sheltering at the time, the vast majority of whom fled to other areas.
