According to Balkhy, the international community must be aware that the needs are extremely complex, there are many mutilated people, children requiring prostheses, situations for which primary care is not enough.

On Wednesday, WHO’s regional director for the Middle East, Hanan Balkhy, said that a catastrophic health crisis is unfolding in Gaza, while levels of life-saving aid are grossly inadequate.

On the complex situation in the Palestinian territory, the World Health Organization (WHO) official warned that at least 7,000 to 11,000 people must be evacuated from Gaza to be treated outside the enclave.

According to Balkhy, the international community must be aware that the needs are extremely complex, there are many mutilated people, children requiring prostheses, situations for which primary care is not enough.

He also welcomed the adoption of a resolution equalizing the participation of Palestine in the WHO, a country that in its previous status contributed constructively to discussions on regional and health issues.

Balkhy also referred to the dire humanitarian emergency in Sudan, with a conflict that has displaced a staggering 8.1 million people, making it the world’s largest displacement crisis, and where up to 80 percent of health facilities are non-functional and humanitarian access is limited.

The WHO representative for the Middle East expressed her hope that diplomacy will take place and come soon to achieve peace in that part of the world, which would go a long way towards providing the health care and services these people need.

“The international community has sent hundreds of tons of food and supplies to the borders that have not entered, it is urgent that the borders are opened, that construction resumes and that people live in dignity so that they can go about their daily business,” she said.
