Gaza Strip: Greece Proposes to the EU to Take in Children

On Wednesday, Greece proposed that the European Union (EU) take in wounded and needy children from the Gaza Strip until the end of hostilities in the enclave, Greek Foreign Minister Georgios Gerapetritis said.

In his remarks after the meeting with his Jordanian counterpart Ayman Safadi, Gerapetritis spoke of specific proposals he presented to the European Council on Foreign Relations.

Firstly, that member states should receive, until the end of the war, children in Gaza who are wounded or lack basic necessities, he said, as quoted by the Greek foreign ministry.

As a second point, Gerapetritis proposed providing technical assistance to deepen democratic institutions and improve the efficiency and transparency of the governance of the State of Palestine.

According to the Greek foreign minister, the third proposal concerns the creation of a working group composed of foreign ministers from Arab and European countries, which will play a mediating role in achieving peace.

Jordan, as an active player in the region, will play a key role in this joint working group, he added.

On 7 October, an attack coordinated by the Islamic Resistance Movement, Hamas, against more than 20 Israeli communities resulted in approximately 1,200 dead, around 5,500 wounded, and the capture of 253 hostages, of whom around 100 were later released in prisoner exchanges.

In retaliation, Israel launched a declaration of war against Hamas and launched a series of bombardments on Gaza, which to date have left more than 37,000 Palestinians dead and more than 86,000 wounded.

Russia and other countries are urging both sides to reach a ceasefire and advocate a two-state solution, approved by the UN in 1947, as the only possible way to achieve lasting peace in the region.
