Lazzarini questioned the destruction of hundreds of schools and the halting of the school year in the enclave, which is home to more than two million Palestinians.

On Friday, the commissioner-general of the UN agency tasked with helping Palestinians, Philippe Lazzarini, denounced the situation of children in the Gaza Strip after eight months of Israeli aggression.

Children suffer first and suffer most in conflict and war, and Gaza is no different, the head of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Middle East (Unrwa) said on social media.

“Children there have gone through what no child anywhere in the world should see or go through,” he warned.

Too many were killed, too many were injured and too many will be scarred for life, said the official, a strong critic of Israeli military operations in the occupied territories.

Lazzarini questioned the destruction of hundreds of schools and the halting of the school year in the enclave, which is home to more than two million Palestinians.

“The war robbed the children of Gaza of their childhood. Without a ceasefire they will become a lost generation, easy to fall prey to exploitation,” he said.

On the same social network, Unrwa warned yesterday that more than 330,000 tonnes of rubbish is accumulating in populated or nearby areas in the Strip due to the war and the destruction caused by the army.

Such a situation “poses catastrophic environmental and health risks”, it stressed.

A week ago, on the same social network, Unwra warned that the conflict in Gaza disrupted the lives of millions of Palestinians and caused catastrophic damage to the natural environment on which they depend for water, clean air and food.

Restoration of environmental services will take decades and cannot even begin until a ceasefire, he said at the time.
