The situation in northern Gaza has become untenable, with Civil Defence paralyzed for three days by heavy shelling.

The spokesman for the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), Kazem Abu Khalaf, stressed that the situation in Gaza “exceeds all limits” and that Israeli actions are seriously affecting the civilian population.

Israel’s recent decision to terminate the work of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Middle East (UNRWA) has had a negative impact on humanitarian operations in the region.

Khalaf said UNRWA is critical to the humanitarian response in Gaza, and its closure could further exacerbate the crisis.

The official also denounced that the Israeli bombing does not distinguish between civilians and military, violating international law.

In the midst of this crisis, child health data is alarming, one in five children in Gaza suffer from malnutrition, and many are in a state of excessive thinness as a result of food shortages.

UNICEF spokesman lamented “All our petitions, reports and statements calling for the cessation of hostilities in Lebanon and Gaza fall on deaf ears”.

The situation is further complicated by the recent cancellation of the 1967 agreement between Israel and UNRWA, announced by the Israeli Foreign Minister, Yisrael Katz.

The decision, described as an unprecedented historic escalation against UN agencies, causing condemnation of Palestinian, Arab and international governments and groups.

Meanwhile, Israeli forces intensified their attacks on Jabalia, north of Gaza, on Monday and fired smoke bombs into the Al-Qassasib area.

Since 7 October 2023, Israeli attacks in Gaza have left 43,374 dead, 102,261 injured and more than 10,000 missing, including children and youth.
