At a crucial moment for the region, the Qatari Emir, Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, has held significant meetings in Doha with Hamas and U.S. delegations to discuss the state of truce negotiations in Gaza.

This meeting comes in a delicate context, where the chances of an agreement with Israel seem closer than ever.

Upon receiving the Hamas delegation led by Khalil al-Hayya, the Qatari Emir reaffirmed his country’s commitment to the Palestinian cause and its aspiration to establish an independent Palestinian state based on the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.

This support underlines Qatar’s role as a mediator in the conflict and its interest in promoting stability in the region.

Subsequently, al-Thani met with Steve Witkoff, envoy of U.S. President-elect Donald Trump, and Brett McGurk, coordinator for Middle East affairs at the U.S. National Security Council.

During this meeting, recent progress in ceasefire negotiations and the current situation in Gaza and the occupied territories were discussed. This dialogue was complemented by a phone call between the Emir and outgoing President Joe Biden, which indicates Washington’s continued attention to the crisis.

According to sources close to Hamas, an “initial” ceasefire agreement with Israel is expected to be signed in the coming days.

This pact would include the release of 34 Israeli hostages in exchange for a one-and-a-half-month ceasefire, as well as the release of approximately 1,000 Palestinian prisoners. The proposal envisages additional steps that would seek to end the war and facilitate the Israeli withdrawal from Gaza.

So far, the only agreement reached was a temporary truce in November 2023, which allowed for the exchange of 105 hostages for 210 Palestinian prisoners.

The evolution of these negotiations is crucial not only for peace in Gaza but also for future relations between Israel, Palestine, and their respective allies.

With the arrival of a new U.S. government, the geopolitical landscape could undergo significant changes that directly impact the Middle East peace process.
