The international health agency condemned the attacks on the civilian population in Palestine.

The Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, made an urgent call on Tuesday to stop attacks in the Gaza Strip, emphasizing that neither vaccines nor medicines can save lives if people continue to be killed by Israeli forces.

«It is unacceptable that, in the midst of a humanitarian crisis, the population of Gaza is being repeatedly shelled, even in areas considered safe», Ghebreyesus said through his X account. His message highlights the critical need for an immediate ceasefire, especially following the recent air strikes in Khan Younis, which have left a tragic toll of lives lost and injured.

In a recent attack, the IDF carried out an offensive in al-Mawasi, an area designated as «humanitarian», resulting in at least 40 Palestinians killed and leaving 60 wounded, plus dozens of missing. This act has been described as a massacre by various human rights organizations.

The situation in Gaza has deteriorated dramatically since 7 October, with reports indicating that more than 41,000 Palestinians have lost their lives and nearly 95,000 have been injured. In addition, it is estimated that at least 10,000 people are missing, presumably under the rubble of their homes.

WHO and other international organizations have expressed concern about the disproportionate impact of violence on women and children, who constitute the majority of victims.

The aggression has forced nearly two million people to leave their homes, creating the largest mass exodus since the 1948 Nakba, with many displaced seeking refuge in the already overcrowded city of Rafah near the border with Egypt.

Ghebreyesus concluded his statement by underlining that «the international community must act urgently to end this crisis and ensure the protection of civilians in Gaza».
