In an unexpected turn in his political career, Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze announced on Thursday the decision to suspend talks on Georgia’s accession to the European Union until 2028.

During a press conference, Kobakhidze explained that this measure had already been envisaged and that the country would also renounce all aid from the European bloc. Kobakhidze argued that accession negotiations have been used by certain European politicians and bureaucrats as instruments of blackmail.

“It is absolutely unacceptable for Georgia to consider integration into the European Union as a matter of charity,” said the prime minister, stressing that the country should be treated with respect and dignity. According to him, the current dynamics of negotiations damage Georgia’s reputation, and it is necessary to change the tone of the dialogues.

The decision comes against a backdrop of growing political tension in Georgia, following the European Parliament’s adoption of a resolution rejecting the results of parliamentary elections held last October. This resolution has led the international community to demand new elections, creating a climate of internal discontent.

The country’s president, Salomé Zurabishvili, aligned herself with the opposition’s demands by also calling for new elections. From the Presidential Palace, Zurabishvili stated that “the only way out of the current situation is to call new elections for Parliament.”

His stance has resonated with citizens, who have taken to the streets of Tbilisi in protest. Thousands of protesters gathered in areas near Parliament, demanding changes in government.

Clashes between demonstrators and police forces have escalated, with tear gas being used to disperse protesters. The situation is becoming increasingly tense, reflecting widespread discontent with the current administration and its policies.

This announcement regarding the suspension of talks with the EU marks a turning point in relations between Georgia and Europe, creating uncertainty about the country’s political and economic future.

As the crisis develops, both Georgian and European leaders must find a way forward that avoids further divisions and promotes constructive dialogue.
