“This headquarters will play an important role in coordinating NATO’s maritime activities in the Baltic Sea and in facilitating the integration of our newest members, Finland and Sweden,” Pistorius said, noting that the new command post will be responsible for planning joint maneuvers and will be ready to lead naval operations in times of peace, crisis, and war.

He emphasized that the Baltic is a region of great geopolitical importance and “a front in the collective defense against evolving threats,” whose security is inseparable from the security of the entire continent.

Pistorius highlighted that Russia’s special military operation in Ukraine has further underscored the relevance of the region for Europe, which faces different forms of cyber and hybrid threats “that continue to blur the line between peace and war.”

With the inauguration of the new command center, Germany is taking a step forward and showing its allies that it remains committed to the security of the region and the strength of NATO.

“By leading the Baltic Task Force Command in the coming years, Germany will work hand in hand with our NATO partners, pooling our resources and capabilities to deter aggression and ensure freedom of movement in the Baltic,” he said, specifying that the new center will be led by a German admiral but will also include contributions from eleven other NATO member countries.

Meanwhile, on Monday, several dozen protesters gathered during the event in front of the headquarters to protest the inauguration of the new military facilities in Rostock.
