Ghana’s Former President John Dramani Mahama Wins The Race For the Executive Office

Leftist National Democratic Congress’ candidate, and former president of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama won the presidential race after his main opponent, the curent vice-president Mahamudu Bawumia, conceded defeat.

Electoral Commission has yet to publish the official results, the NDC held a press conference before Bawumia’s speech and said that its internal tally shows that Mahama leads the presidential race with 56% of the votes, while they will control at least 185 of the 276 seats in Parliament.

Bawumia, admitted defeat in the presidential elections on Saturday, saying that data collected by his party, the center-right New Patriotic Party, confirmed a defeat for the government.

“The people of Ghana have spoken, the people have voted for change at this time and we respect it with all humility,” Bawumia said

The 66-year-old NDC leader himself confirmed a call from the vice president and former president-aspirant on his X social network account. ” This morning I received a congratulatory call from my brother, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, after my resounding victory in the elections on Saturday. Thank you, Ghana”, he wrote.

Early results had shown Mahama and the NDC party leading the votes counting. Local media say Mahama was leading with over 53% of the vote to Bawumia’s 45.16% after provisional results from 68 out of a total 276 constituencies were counted.

The results of Saturday’s elections put an end to two terms in power for the ruling New Patriotic Party under President Nana Akufo-Addo, marked by Ghana’s worst economic crisis in decades, involving high inflation and a default on its foreign debt.
