Axel Kicillof, governor of the province of Buenos Aires, the most populous in Argentina, accused the country’s president, Javier Milei, of creating “chaos” in the electoral system by changing the system without consulting the provinces.

“Milei changed the system out of nowhere, without consulting the province. If the voting took place on the same day, for the first time in history there would be two ballot boxes with different systems,” Kicillof pointed out in statements this Saturday to the Buenos Aires newspaper La Nueva Provincia.
“How long would each vote take? We all know there are places where people crowd to vote. From a logistical and operational point of view, Milei created a problem for us. It’s all his responsibility,” said Kicillof, one of the main leaders of the Peronist front Union for the Fatherland.
The Milei government is also pushing for parliamentary suspension of primary elections this year, which should be held before national legislative elections to define candidates, something that is being challenged by the opposition.
“Doubling the election has its challenges because the province would have to face a different choice. And, to top it all off, Milei, for the first time in Argentine democratic history, sent a law changing the primaries in an election year. He created chaos with the electoral system”, said Kicillof, who served as Minister of Economy during the government of Cristina Fernández (2007-2015).
Last year, under the impetus of officialdom, Parliament approved a single paper ballot on which to vote by marking the boxes corresponding to the parties or electoral fronts from the national legislative elections to be held this year.
Until now, each party presented its own ballot in the national election, a system that will continue to be used in many provinces of Argentina, including Buenos Aires, for the election of provincial legislative posts.
This will mean that, if both national and provincial elections are held on the same day, two different electoral systems will coexist, unless each province decides to double its national elections, which would normally be held in October.
