The Danish politician reiterated that Donald Trump’s suggestion to buy the territory was an “absurd discussion.”
On Tuesday, Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen responded to statements by U.S. President-elect Donald Trump regarding a potential acquisition of Greenland. She reiterated that this autonomous territory is part of the Danish Crown.

“My starting point and the government’s starting point are very clear: Greenland’s future will be decided in Greenland,” Frederiksen told TV2 on the same day Trump’s eldest son visited the island on what he described as a private trip.
“Greenland belongs to the Greenlanders,” emphasized the Prime Minister, who had previously dismissed Trump’s 2019 suggestion, during his first term, of purchasing the territory as an “absurd discussion.”
Frederiksen added that if, at some point, the people of Greenland make a decision of one kind or another, the Danish government will take a stance accordingly. Additionally, the Prime Minister urged calm regarding the matter and affirmed her belief that “we are stronger together.”
The island came under Danish jurisdiction when Denmark and Norway separated in 1814 and was fully integrated into the Danish state in 1953. However, in a 2008 referendum, Greenlanders voted for greater autonomy, and full independence is one of the key campaign issues for the April parliamentary elections.
“I am hearing that the people of Greenland are MAGA. My son, Don Jr, and various representatives, will be traveling there to visit some of the most magnificent areas and sights,” Trump wrote on the Truth Social app, announcing his son Donald Trump Jr.’s visit.
“Greenland is an incredible place, and the people will benefit tremendously if, and when, it becomes part of our Nation. We will protect it, and cherish it, from a very vicious outside World. Make Greenland Great Agains!, the Republican politician added.
So far, Greenlandic authorities have denied any planned meetings between Donald Trump Jr. and members of the autonomous government.
During Christmas, Trump, who will assume the presidency for the second time on January 20, declared that control of the island is “an absolute necessity” for U.S. national security. At the time, Greenland’s Prime Minister, Mute B. Egede responded by stating, “Greenland is not for sale,” he said.
