Grenada is set to commemorate the 51st anniversary of its independence from British rule, achieved on February 7, 1974. This year’s celebrations will take place under the theme “The Next 50: Embracing a Future of Development, Transformation, and Unity,” reflecting the nation’s spirit of progress and national cohesion.
The Botanical Garden in Carriacou has been selected as one of the main venues for the commemorative events, marking its first use since the 49th anniversary celebrations. The authorities of Grenada have called on public and private associations to organize cultural events for this significant date.
Grenada, an archipelago spanning 344 square kilometers with nearly 90,000 inhabitants, primarily of African descent, is renowned for its stunning beaches and the Grand Etang National Park, which features a lake within an ancient volcanic crater. Additionally, it is globally recognized as the “Island of Spice,” being one of the largest producers and exporters of nutmeg, cloves, ginger, vanilla, and cocoa.
On the international stage, Grenada is a member of the Commonwealth of Nations and maintains relations with numerous countries. It is also a full member of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States, and the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America-Peoples’ Trade Treaty (ALBA-TCP).
Grenada’s independence was the result of years of struggle led by Sir Eric M. Gairy, who, after an arduous political campaign, succeeded in liberating the country from British colonialism. The independence ceremony took place at Fort George, where the Union Jack was lowered, and Grenada’s national flag was raised at midnight, marking the dawn of a new era of freedom and sovereignty.
Today, Grenada proudly celebrates its independence, looking forward to a future filled with development, transformation, and unity, in homage to those who fought for its freedom and laid the foundations of the nation.
