Group of Friends in Defense of the UN Charter Condemns the Israeli Attacks on Lebanon

The Group of Friends in Defense of the UN Charter created under the coordination of Venezuela in 2021, stated its categorical rejection to the “atrocious premeditated attack by Israel against Lebanon on September 27, 2024” which resulted in the assassination of Seyyed Hasan Nasrallah, leader of Hizbollah in Lebanon, and General Abbas Nilforoushan, a senior Iranian official.

Trhough a statement, the state members of the group underline that this “reprehensible attack constitutes a flagrant violation of the Charter of the United Nations, the fundamental principles and norms of international law”, as well as the international humanitarian law and international human rights law.

In this regard, the group stresses the importance of respecting the territorial integrity and sovereignty of States like a fundamental principle enshrined in the UN Charter and expressing their Serious concern over the continuing attempts by Israel, the occupying Power, to ignite and blow up the Middle East.

The Member States of the Group of Friends in Defence of the United Nations Charter further express their grave concern at the threats and use of force by Israel against other countries in the region.

The Group notes that repeated Israeli attacks on Syrian territory and other violations of human rights constitute “clear aggression against the territory of a sovereign State and a flagrant violation of the provisions of international law” and that including the Israeli attack on Damascus on 1 and 2 October 2024 demonstrate their intention to increase the conflicts.

“The States members of the Group of Friends in Defence UN Charter further express their deep concern at the threats of use and use of force by Israel against other countries in the region, in particular the recent Israeli attempts and incursions against Lebanon, including the Israeli ground military incursion with the aim of continuing its genocidal attacks,” reads the statement.

In this context, the Group reiterates that such attacks and threats “constitute a serious threat to international peace and security, while stressing its deep concern at the dismaying humanitarian consequences of such legal acts by Israel.”

The Group further expresses its condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and wishes for the prompt and full recovery of all those injured in this atrocious attack and its unwavering support for Iran, one of the founding members of the Group.
