Guatemala: Authorities Counts 28 Deaths and 26,000 Evacuees During the Rainy Season

The rainy season in Guatemala has left 28 people dead and just over 26,000 people evacuated since May, official sources reported on Monday.

The National Coordination for Disaster Reduction (CONRED) detailed that in addition to the 28 fatalities of the rain, 13 people were also injured, no missing so far.

The greatest number of deaths from rainfall is in the department (province) of Suchitepéquez, with four in total, followed by the department of San Marcos. Both are located in the south-west of the Central American country.

According to the same source, 26,240 people have been evacuated due to rain damage since May and 9,327 are currently at risk.

Most deaths are caused by the victims being swept away by rivers or unexpected water flows, as well as landslides, landslides and other incidents.

The rainy season in Guatemala runs every year from May to October and in 2023 left a balance of 65 people dead and 13 missing.

Civil protection authorities also count this year six bridges destroyed throughout the country for the same reason and 57 more with various damages.
