Guatemala is in mourning following a tragic bus accident that occurred early this morning in the capital, leaving at least 50 people dead and several survivors trapped.

The incident took place when a bus, overcrowded with passengers traveling from San Agustín Acasaguastlán to Guatemala City, plunged from the Belice Bridge, falling approximately 20 meters into a ravine on a heavily trafficked highway.

Carlos Hernández, spokesperson for the city’s fire department, explained that the bus lost control of its brakes and collided with two other vehicles that were stopped at a traffic light. “The bus lost control while traveling on the route… It crashed into two sedan-type vehicles that were waiting at the traffic light,” Hernández detailed, describing the moment of the accident.

In response to this tragedy, Guatemalan President Bernardo Arévalo has declared three days of national mourning. Additionally, he has mobilized the army and the country’s disaster agency to assist in rescue efforts and provide support to the victims.

In a heartfelt message posted on social media, Arévalo expressed his solidarity with the affected families: “I stand in solidarity with the families of the victims who woke up to devastating news today. Their pain is my pain.”

The tragedy has shocked the nation, which is grappling with profound sadness over the loss of lives in this devastating accident. Authorities continue to work on recovering survivors and investigating the causes that led to this fatal event.
