The Gun Violence Archive (GVA), a non-profit organization tracking gun violence incidents in the United States, reported 15,717 firearm deaths in the first eleven months of 2024, including the first week of December. This total comprises 1,323 unintentional deaths and 632 suicides.

The GVA also recorded 479 mass shootings—defined as incidents resulting in four or more fatalities—during this period.

The organization noted that of the over 2,000 mass shootings since 2013 where the perpetrator is known, fewer than 60 were committed by women. This statistic is highlighted in light of a recent school shooting in Wisconsin, where a 15-year-old female student killed a teacher and another student before taking her own life. Six others were injured, two critically.

GVA data indicates a steady increase in mass shootings since 2014, rising from less than one per day to nearly two per day in 2023. These incidents are concentrated in states along the Atlantic coast.

Despite the rising toll of gun violence, stricter gun control measures, particularly regarding automatic weapons, remain politically stalled.

The Republican Party largely opposes stricter regulations, while Democratic efforts to enact stricter laws have had limited success.

Following the Wisconsin school shooting, President Joe Biden urged Congress to act, calling for the passage of “sensible gun safety laws.” This call echoed a previous debate between then-candidate Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris, where Trump falsely claimed Harris wanted to confiscate guns, a claim she refuted.
