The Federation of Civil Construction Workers recalled that 24 union leaders have been killed in recent years.

On Thursday night, a hitman murdered Arturo Cardenas, who had been elected as the leader of Lima and Balnearios’ civil construction workers one year ago. He was killed while in his car after leaving a meeting at the union headquarters located in Lima’s La Victoria district.

His wife, Delia Nevado, demanded that the National Police and the Ministry of the Interior solve the crime swiftly and not allow it to go unpunished.

“That is the only thing I ask for: justice, not only for him but for the many people who are murdered and forgotten. I ask that the perpetrators be identified because there are cameras and videos,” she said.

Nevado regretted that her husband did not have security despite the risks involved in his work. She said she did not know if Cardenas had received any prior threats.

The text reads, “In Peru there is a model worse than neoliberalism. It is the free monopoly, the free plunder, and the free assault on Peruvians by right-wing organized crime. Now, the rich parasites receive subsidies from the State. Poor users subsidize electricity for the rich.”

The Federation of Civil Construction Workers (FTCCP) condemned the murder and recalled that 24 union leaders have been killed in recent years by criminal organizations.

The masterminds behind these crimes seek to eliminate union leaders who defend construction work and refuse to be extorted, the FTCCP stated.

Interior Minister Juan Santivañez conveyed to FTCCP Secretary Luis Alberto Villanueva his commitment to bringing the material and intellectual authors of Cárdenas’ murder to justice.
