Haiti: Customs Urged to Strengthen Fight Against Arms Trafficking

Recently, the AGD reported that a shipment of arms seized here came from the United States, a country considered to be one of those responsible for the trafficking of these weapons in the Caribbean country.

On Monday, members of Haiti’s Presidential Transitional Council highlighted the importance of the General Customs Administration (AGD) in the fight against arms trafficking, a scourge that continues to plague citizens.

Presidential advisors Fritz Alphonse Jean and Leslie Voltaire met with the director general of the General Customs Administration, Julcène Édouard, and several executives of the institution.

They discussed how Customs can help the country combat the phenomenon of insecurity.

Alphonse Jean said that the said institution must play its role in the fight against arms trafficking.

Recently, the AGD reported that a shipment of arms seized here came from the United States, a country considered to be one of those responsible for the trafficking of these weapons in the Caribbean country.

According to the AGD communiqué, “12 assault rifles, 14 pistols, 999 cartridges including 638 of 2.56 calibre, 278 of nine millimetre calibre, 52 of 7.62 calibre and 36 of 40 calibre, and 34 magazines” were seized.

According to the Van Bef Info website, the United States is among those guilty of drug and arms trafficking in Haiti, elements that are reinforcing today’s increase in violence in the Caribbean country.

Customs officials regularly seize firearms concealed with food products, the website said.
