The Transitional Presidential Council in Haiti dismissed Prime Minister Garry Conille, amid a conflict over government control.

The decision was published in the country’s official daily on Monday and comes after weeks of tensions between Conille and the council, which is seeking to make significant changes to the cabinet.

The nine-member council, established in April to guide Haiti against a backdrop of rising violence and following the resignation of Prime Minister Ariel Henry, had appointed Conille in June.

The Council has instead appointed businessman Alix Didier Fils-Aimé as the new prime minister. This transition takes place in a climate of accusations of corruption and disputes over the legality of the process, as Conille has questioned the legitimacy of the decision, arguing that it violates the Haitian Constitution.

In a statement, he ordered the body responsible for publishing official decisions not to notify dismissal, noting that the council does not have the authority to dismiss a prime minister, although it can appoint him.

The former prime minister has also expressed that this action raises serious doubts about the legitimacy of the Council and its implications for the future of the country.
