The human rights situation in Haiti continues to deteriorate, warned this Friday the independent expert William O’Neill, appointed by the UN to study the situation on this matter in the depressed Caribbean country, For years, the European Union has been mired in a crisis of all kinds.

“I am sad to say that all indicators remain extremely worrying. The first, and more worrying, is insecurity. (…) We must put an end to this permanent agony. It is a race against time,” he told the press.

He noted that, despite an international embargo, weapons and ammunition continue to be smuggled into the country, allowing gangs to carry out large-scale attacks and extend their control and influence into new territories.

Areas not yet affected by gang violence are suffering their direct impact, with rampant inflation, shortages of basic necessities and flows of internally displaced persons further increasing the vulnerability of the population, children and women in particular, O’Neill stressed, who described the humanitarian and human rights consequences of this as dramatic.

The Haitian National Police lacks the logistical and technical capacity to deal with gangs, he added.

Meanwhile, the population continues to suffer violations of all its human rights. ” Sexual violence, used as a weapon by the gangs to control the population, has increased dramatically in recent months”, the expert noted.

Gangs are increasingly involved in child trafficking and forced recruitment, often using them to carry out attacks on public institutions and police operations. ” Young people are losing hope for a better future, she said.
