They died in exchanges of gunfire with law enforcement officers during operations conducted in one of Base Gran Grif’s strongholds in the locality of Palmiste, in the central region of Artibonite.
The National Police stated it “intensifies its efforts to restore order and security in the department,” according to a statement published on its Facebook page, where it reiterated its “determination” to “dismantle armed gangs to allow the population to carry out their activities.”
At the same time, the police affirmed that it “is intensifying its operations and interventions aimed at dismantling armed gangs across the national territory, particularly in the Artibonite department, where significant progress is being made in the fight against organized crime.”
The armed group Base Gran Grif had been identified as responsible for the massacre of over 115 people in an armed attack in Pont-Sondé, located in the Artibonite department.
Between December 10 and 11, it was also responsible for another massacre that left more than 20 dead in the communal section of Petite Rivière in Artibonite.
Criminal groups control more than 80 percent of the capital and its surrounding areas, while the police and the United Nations stabilization mission lack the resources needed to restore order and security.
