The Islamic Resistance Movement, Hamas, and a US envoy held a meeting, confirmed a Palestinian resistance leader to Al Mayadeen on Wednesday night.

According to his statements, the meeting focused solely on the exchange of prisoners and did not address broader issues such as a ceasefire or the end of the war in the Gaza Strip.

“The US side did not present a specific framework for a prisoner exchange but listened to Hamas’s perspective on the matter,” said the Palestinian official. He also emphasized that the envoy “left with a positive impression of the meeting, and that it is possible to negotiate with the movement.”

During his remarks to Al Mayadeen, the leader revealed that the meeting took place at the request of the Americans and caught the Israelis by surprise.

The Axios website reported that the administration of US President Donald Trump “held direct and secret talks with Hamas” about the prisoners in the Gaza Strip. The talks, conducted by the US presidential envoy for prisoner affairs, Adam Boehler, are “unprecedented,” noted political correspondent Barak Ravid.

The reporter explained that “the United States has never directly dealt with Hamas,” which Washington designated as a “terrorist organization” in 1997. Ravid added that meetings between Boehler and Hamas officials took place in recent weeks in Doha, Qatar, focusing in part on the release of American prisoners, but “no agreement has been reached so far.”

Although the Trump administration consulted with “Israel” about the possibility of negotiating with Hamas, “Tel Aviv” learned aspects of the talks through other channels, according to a source.
