This Tuesday, the Islamist group Hamas expressed renewed optimism regarding ongoing negotiations in Doha, as well as talks with the United States, which could mark the beginning of the second phase of a ceasefire in Gaza and potentially bring an end to the war that has devastated the region.
Hamas emphasized its hope that these discussions will lead to significant progress in the peace process, including the withdrawal of Israeli forces from the Gaza Strip and the establishment of a prisoner exchange agreement.
The arrival of an Israeli delegation in Doha, led by Gal Hirsch, the coordinator for hostage affairs, along with other security officials and advisors to the Israeli prime minister, marks a significant milestone in this context.
Hamas confirmed that negotiations began today and highlighted its “responsible and positive” approach to the talks, which also include U.S. Presidential Envoy for Hostage Affairs Adam Boehler.
This development is notable as it represents a shift in the dynamics of the relationship between the United States and Hamas. Historically, Washington has designated Hamas as a terrorist organization since 1997 and has never engaged in direct talks with the group.
However, U.S. State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce clarified that these interactions do not constitute formal negotiations and reiterated that the removal of Hamas from Gaza remains an essential condition for any lasting solution to the conflict.
