Ruto appointed Deputy Inspector General Douglas Kanja as the new acting chief of the Kenyan police

Kenya’s police chief, Japhet Koome, resigned on Friday, just a day after the country’s president, William Ruto, dismissed the majority of his government after weeks of strong protests against the government’s plans to raise taxes.

Ruto, “president and commander in chief of the Defense Forces, accepted on July 12, 2024 the resignation of (…) Japhet N. Koome (…) as inspector general of the National Police Service,” said in a statement the Kenyan Presidency.

Ruto appointed Deputy Inspector General Douglas Kanja as the new acting chief of the Kenyan police. In addition to other senior police appointments, the president also appointed a new chief to the Kenya Prison Service.

These are not the first changes registered in the leadership of the Kenyan authorities, after Ruto announced on Thursday in a televised message to the nation the dissolution of all his government, except the Foreign Minister and the vice president, and the dismissal of the attorney general.

“After listening carefully to the people of Kenya and a comprehensive analysis of the performance of my Administration and its achievements and challenges, I have decided (…) to dismiss with immediate effect all ministers and the Attorney General,” said the president from the State House, Presidency headquarters in Nairobi.

Ruto made this announcement after a series of mass protests that since June 18 opposed a controversial bill involving a tax hike and gradually transformed into anti-government demonstrations, despite the fact that the president finally refused to sign the legislative initiative.
