Israel threatened the Lebanese people with a war that will bring destruction and suffering similar to what is happening in Gaza.

On Wednesday, Hezbollah launched an attack on Israeli troops in a border area with Lebanon, a day after Israel claimed to have killed the Shiite group’s new leader, Hashem Safi al Din.

Hezbollah bombarded Israeli occupation forces trying to advance into Lebanese territory with missiles and artillery shells. Hezbollah’s actions triggered sirens in Metula, in northern Israel, on the border with Lebanon.

On Tuesday, Hezbollah launched 180 projectiles from Lebanon into Israel, a country that keeps its air and ground offensive in the neighboring nation. The Shiite group has attacked over 4,200 enemy targets both in Israel and in southern Lebanon, where a week ago the Israeli army began a series of ground operations that Hezbollah has largely managed to contain so far.

On Tuesday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that his military forces had killed Hashem Safi al Din, who would have succeeded Hassan Nasrallah as Hezbollah’s leader.

Netanyahu threatened the Lebanese people with “a long war that will bring destruction and suffering similar to what we see in Gaza” if the Lebanese do not get rid of Hezbollah. He also dared to claim that it is not Israel that occupies Lebanon but Iran because of its support for Hezbollah.

The Israeli army announced the mobilization of the 146th armored division on Lebanese territory to carry out “limited, localized and specific operational activities” in southern Lebanon. According to the Times of Israel, the number of soldiers deployed in Lebanon may already exceed 15,000.

For his part, Hezbollah’s deputy secretary Naim Qassem vowed that Israel would not achieve its objectives and would be defeated in southern Lebanon. Meanwhile, the effects of the Israeli offensive remain catastrophic. Over the past two weeks, Israeli forces have killed over 2,100 people in Lebanon.
