Honduras: At Least Four Dead and Thousands Affected by Heavy Rains

At least four people died and thousands were affected by heavy rains in Honduras, where authorities decided on Friday to maintain yellow alert or surveillance for three of the country’s 18 departments.

Three of the persons, including a 7-year-old boy, drowned while a 4-year-old boy died from falling walls due to heavy rains, according to a report from the Secretariat of State in the National Risk and Contingency Management Offices of Honduras.
Two of the deaths are reported in the department of Choluteca, southern Honduras, one of the regions most affected by rainfall so far.
According to official statistics, at least 24,000 people have been affected, 5,244 are affected, 721 have been evacuated and 75 communities have been isolated by floods or road damage. In addition, 593 houses have been reported damaged and 27 destroyed.
The mayor of the municipality of Concepción de María, in Choluteca, Yamileth Ordóñez, indicated that the high level of rivers has destroyed several bridges, keeping 15,000 people incommunicado.
