WHO Urges Immediate Action for Medical Evacuations in Gaza Amidst Escalating Health Crisis
In a concerning update on the situation in the Gaza Strip, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported that since the resumption of Israeli airstrikes a week ago, more than 120,000 Palestinians have been displaced from their homes. The evacuation orders issued by Israel now cover roughly 15% of the enclave—an area comparable in size to Manhattan.
OCHA’s latest statement highlights that, as of last night, two new evacuation orders have been issued, affecting an additional 100,000 to 120,000 people in the Northern Gaza governorate. The situation is especially dire for 27,000 displaced individuals sheltering in nearly 40 makeshift camps.
Hospitals and Water Supplies at Risk
The new evacuation zones include areas where two hospitals, a primary care center, and a medical post are located. Other medical facilities sit less than a kilometer from the designated evacuation areas, severely jeopardizing access to essential healthcare for affected civilians.
The humanitarian crisis is further exacerbated by the fact that over 100 wells and 30 water reservoirs have become inaccessible due to the evacuation orders. OCHA has raised alarms over the Israeli military’s refusal to allow humanitarian organizations to coordinate relief efforts, hindering the distribution of supplies and fuel deliveries to bakeries that rely on generators to keep operating.
