In an alarming statement, World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus warned that medical supplies in Gaza could be exhausted within two to four weeks due to Israel’s prolonged humanitarian blockade, imposed since March 2.

During a press briefing, Tedros stressed the urgent need to lift the blockade, protect healthcare systems, and ensure unrestricted access for humanitarian workers in the region.

The WHO chief highlighted the severe consequences of the blockade, including rising malnutrition among Gazan families, many of whom lack clean water, shelter, and adequate medical care. This critical situation has significantly increased the risk of disease and death among vulnerable populations.

Tedros also revealed that 180,000 vaccine doses have been unable to enter Gaza, leaving approximately 60,000 children under two years old unimmunized. The local healthcare system is only partially operational and overwhelmed, while attacks on medical facilities have claimed the lives of over 400 humanitarian workers since the conflict began.

Despite these challenges, the WHO continues its operations in Gaza, distributing supplies and training local workers. Recently, the organization evacuated 18 patients for treatment in Norway, Malta, Luxembourg, and Romania, though over 10,000 people still await evacuation.

The crisis in Gaza grows increasingly dire, with the international community expressing concern over the lack of action to prevent a looming humanitarian catastrophe.
