The patient was detected by a group of doctors from Pueblo County, Colorado, USA.
This disease, doctors say, is caused by the bacteria ‘Yersinia pestis’. It is transmitted by the bite of fleas, which normally inhabit wild rodents.
It is also transmitted by “touching or skinning infected animals or by inhaling cough droplets from an infected person or animal”.
The PDPHE has continued to look for the source of infection and has asked the public to take the necessary precautions in order to prevent infection.
On the same line, the entity suggested eliminating the places where rodents can hide and reproduce, avoid rubbing with dead animals, makes use of insect repellents, as well as not allowing pets to sleep in bed.
Among the symptoms, were detailed “sudden fever and chills, severe headache, muscle aches, nausea, vomiting and feeling of discomfort. Another common symptom is inflammation of the lymph nodes with pain”.
For her part, the program manager of the Office of Communicable Diseases and Emergency Preparedness of the PDPHE, Alicia Solis, stressed that in the presence of these symptoms, a “health care provider should be consulted immediately”.
“The plague can be successfully treated with antibiotics, but an infected person should be treated immediately to avoid serious complications or death», he added.
Last February, authorities confirmed a case of human plague in Deschutes County, Oregon.
