India confirmed on Wednesday its second case of mpox since the World Health Organization (WHO) declared a global emergency last month, and it was detected in the south of the country in a man who had traveled to the United Arab Emirates.

“The disease has been confirmed in the person who was being treated with symptoms of mpox in Malappuram,” Kerala state Health Minister Veena George said in a Facebook post.
The regional minister added that the patient, a 38-year-old man who recently returned from the United Arab Emirates, is isolated in the hospital and said it was he himself who went to the medical center when he presented symptoms of mpox.
However, the authorities have not yet reported whether the case corresponds to variant 1b, the most dangerous and which prompted the WHO alert on 14 August.
This is the second case of mpox in India since the start of the alert, after a young man tested positive last week in New Delhi after travelling to West Africa.
In South Asia, Pakistan has recorded seven cases of mpox since the declaration of a health emergency, but all cases confirmed by Islamabad correspond to the least dangerous variant of the virus.
