The upcoming World Media Summit, set to begin Monday in the Uygur Autonomous Region of Xinjiang, northwest China, will provide a comprehensive view of developments in artificial intelligence (AI), which is the central theme of the forum, according to Felix Paz, Director of Media at Editora Perú.

In an interview with Xinhua, Paz expressed his anticipation for the summit, highlighting that there will be “much debate” and a sharing of perspectives from countries across the Americas, Asia, and Africa regarding AI.

Paz noted that AI is currently a trending topic amid a “complicated” environment for journalists grappling with fake news and misinformation. He is hopeful that discussions with global colleagues will lead to “guidelines” that defend the journalistic mission of seeking real and truthful information.

He emphasized that AI should serve as a “tool to verify sources and determine whether information originates from real events,” or, conversely, to identify attempts to create narratives that contribute to a post-truth scenario.

The summit, he believes, will aid in “understanding the perspectives and actions taken in other regions,” providing a global viewpoint to draw conclusions and enhance comprehension of this technological development.

Paz remarked on the rapid pace of change in the world, noting that while transformations used to occur every ten years, they now happen monthly. The significance of AI has surged in recent months, particularly for media organizations.

He recalled how digital transformation has enabled access to new communication platforms like WeChat, WhatsApp, and Telegram, with AI now playing a role in content generation. “Technological development is crucial for us,” he insisted, emphasizing the need for social media and websites to feature content generated through AI, supported by reliable, historical data.

Currently, he stated that “the great debate” in academic circles revolves around the necessity for students to acquire digital skills that can combat fake news using AI.

Paz also acknowledged Xinhua’s efforts in utilizing AI to create engaging content and highlighted the importance of establishing partnerships for knowledge exchange. “The key is to share knowledge,” he said, as this collaboration will help generate valid and useful content for readers and users alike.
