Iran and the United States held negotiations in Oman this Saturday seeking an agreement on the Iranian nuclear program in a “constructive atmosphere,” and will continue the dialogue in a week.

The official statement reads that the representatives exchanged positions of their respective governments on “issues related to Iran’s peaceful nuclear programme and the lifting of sanctions” through the mediation of the Omani Foreign Minister, Badr bin Hamad Al Busaidi.
According to the Iranian FM Iranian Foreign Minister, Abbas Araqchi, talks took place “in a constructive environment, based on mutual respect,” which also confirmed that the heads of both delegations held a brief dialogue in the presence of the Omani mediator.
For his part, Al Busaidi highlighted both delegations’ will to continue negotiations within a week, after holding indirect consultations that lasted more than two and a half hours.
The talks are a step forward in an environment of growing tensions over the Iranian nuclear program, exacerbated by US President Donald Trump’s accusations, something that Iran has repeatedly roundly denied.
On March, Trump sent a letter to the Iranian Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei pleading for diplomacy, but warning of military action. For his part, the Iranian president, Masud Pezeshkian, rejected direct talks, insisting on third-party mediated negotiations.
The meeting in Oman represents a new attempt to move forward after the collapse of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), signed in 2015 between Iran and six international powers (Russia, the United States, the United Kingdom, China, France, and Germany).
That agreement established limitations on the Iranian nuclear program in exchange for the lifting of international sanctions, but in 2018, during his previous term, Trump withdrew the United States from the pact and imposed unilateral sanctions against Iran.
In response, Tehran began to gradually reduce its commitments within the agreement, eliminating restrictions on nuclear research and increasing its levels of uranium enrichment.
