January 1, 2025 Hour: 2:37 pm
On the fifth anniversary of the assassination of General Qasem Soleimani, Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei issued a defiant statement, asserting that U.S. military bases in Syria will ultimately be “trampled” under the feet of Syrian youth, and that both imperialist and Zionist forces will eventually be forced to retreat in defeat.

Khamenei’s remarks, delivered during a meeting with Soleimani’s family and comrades, along with families of the victims of last year’s terrorist attack in Kerman, underscored the enduring legacy of the slain commander and the unwavering commitment of Iran to resisting foreign intervention in the region.
Soleimani, a key figure in the fight against the so-called Islamic State (ISIS) and the architect of the “Resistance Front,” was assassinated in a U.S. drone strike in Baghdad on January 3, 2020, an act ordered by then-President Donald Trump.
The assassination was widely condemned as an act of state terrorism and a violation of international law. Khamenei emphasized that Soleimani’s strategy was focused on strengthening the Resistance Front, which he sees as critical to confronting imperialism and Zionism.
He praised the resilience of the Syrian people and emphasized that the youth’s willingness to sacrifice themselves for their nation is a powerful force against foreign encroachment.
“Young people willing to give their lives are the main factor of a nation’s power,” Khamenei stated, denouncing foreign meddling that “removes them from the place of action” and leads to chaos, citing Syria as an example. He affirmed that the “US and the Zionist regime, who have invaded the land of the Syrian people, will one day be forced to retreat.”
The Supreme Leader further highlighted the symbolic importance of Yemen and Lebanon as embodiments of resistance and assured that these nations will ultimately prevail against their adversaries.
“Lebanon has received a blow, but it has not yielded, has not fallen to its knees,” he noted, adding that it is the “power of faith” that ultimately triumphs.
Khamenei’s remarks come at a time of heightened tensions in the region, with U.S. military presence in Syria facing growing resistance from local groups, as well as criticism from the Syrian government. The U.S. maintains that its forces are in the country to fight ISIS, however, critics argue they are actively engaged in geopolitical power games and the extraction of Syrian resources.
The anniversary also serves as a reminder of the US-led drone attack that also killed Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, deputy commander of Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Units (PMU), who also played a crucial role in fighting ISIS.
In response to the assassinations, the IRGC launched a missile attack on the US Ain al-Asad base in Iraq, further escalating tensions in the region. Khamenei’s speech resonates with a left-wing critique of American imperialism, the destructive role of foreign military bases, and the inherent right of nations to self-determination.
His comments further underscore that the resistance to foreign intervention is a growing movement driven by local populations fighting for liberation and challenging established global power structures.
The situation highlights the need for a complete withdrawal of foreign forces from the region to allow true self-determination by the people of Syria and neighboring countries.
